It started with a routine eye exam.

Umay was founded by brother-sister duo, Ali Habib, a curious engineer and Dr. Sharmin Habib, a yogi-optometrist. What started as a routine eye exam, led to the discovery of our complex relationship with digital devices and why we don’t blink.

Our devices strain our eyes and tire our minds in unnatural ways.

The two struggled, both as doctor and patient, with traditional methods that didn't consider the problem as a whole, and set out to find harmony between technology and humanity - and asked what if we create a routine space to be curious about our connections?

It’s time for Digital REST.

In November of 2018, they discovered a malfunction in their first prototype. The heat delivery of the device was not consistent or even, instead it was alternating between the two eyes. Ali described it as a soft wave traveling over his eyes. It instantly stilled his busy mind. It led to a fascinating conversation between the founders which rippled into the need to create a thermo-sensory meditation experience.

Routine Relaxation.

In January 2019, we refined this heating and cooling technology and developed thermal waveforms that would sync with a paced breathing pattern. This helps maximize the state of relaxation and presence one can experience with REST. We introduced Thermal Meditation™ to the world for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where it was acknowledged with an Innovation Award in the Tech for A Better World category. We knew people didn't just need relief, they needed a meditation experience they could feel.
In February 2021, the need for a break for our eyes and mind couldn't have become more obvious. In the heart of the pandemic Umay partnered with the Government of Canada to help 500 wfh employees manage their transition and elevated levels of screen time with REST. The results were so impactful that not only were people's eyes feeling better, they were sleeping better and developing a better sense of calm and connection with themselves and others - we knew it was time to officially launch digital rest and recovery to the world.

About the exhale collective

The exhale collective is an early initiative to create a community-based and expert-led experience that celebrates our calm & clarity. We help provide members with science based tools, knowledge and support they need to be the best version of themselves. We believe in the power of community, accountability and curiosity. Our goal is to take you on a 4 month journey and dive deep into the science and proven methods available, so you too can discover and implement digital rest into your life. Through a personalized assessment you will be able to develop a wellness habit strategy with accountability and support from the community. The exhale collective is an intervention based program and commitment of time, money, and effort.
Members should be prepared to spend at least 1 hour a week to reflect, learn and make real change happen.
